"You're a Very Special Lady" by the legendary O'Jays filtered through the speakers of the Apollo Theatre on the Monday before Valentine's Day, warming up the historic house on the day after what was one of the worst snowstorms in New York City history. Although the amorous song served as a promo for the much-anticipated special O'Jays February 14th love concert, it also served to acknowledge and pay tribute to the legendary theatre that was vaunting her fresh, recently restored façade and luxurious new seats.
Setting the benchmark for the first phase of the Apollo Theater restoration project is the newly refurbished facade of the landmark theatre, which opened in 1934 with "Amateur Night." Inclusive is a burnished steel and fully restored 125th Street terracotta exterior, new box office, state-of-the-art digital marquee, and revamped lobby with plasma screens. Restored by Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners, LLP, the Apollo marquee replicates its original, classic 1940's style features, updated with high-tech, programmable LED visuals.
