MY GENERATION: For Kids, About Kids, By Kids
It's the home stretch of summer, just a month before the kids head back to school. There's nearly a month -- one hot, sticky, dog- day month -- before the kids head back to school.
As a post-Boomer raised on "The Three Stooges," "Hong Kong Phooey" and "Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp," I believe in the hypnotic power of video to turn summer savages into compliant kiddies. And as a dad, I don't mind slipping in some redeeming content, too.
Enjoy these new and recent DVD releases, though I issue this caveat: Any tot under 5 is likely going to want to watch the same thing 708 times. Know what you're getting into.
* "Disney's Little Einsteins: Our Big Huge Adventure" and "Team Up for Adventure" (Walt Disney Video, $19.99 each)
The "Baby Einstein" empire is growing -- literally -- as these videos introduce a quartet of animated kids who team with a happy crimson spaceship, Rocket, to blast across oceans, through paintings and deep into Mexican butterfly forests. The "Little Einstein" method of exposing kids to fine art and racial diversity can be ham-fisted. But the animation is first-rate. And although the content lacks the edge of, say, SpongeBob SquarePants, it's enough to engage any kid...
