The news of veteran Tyrone Davis' July 3 surgery to repair a torn hamstring didn't quite ruin Jeff Jagodzinski's summer vacation, but it sure made his job a lot more difficult when he returned to work at the Green Bay Packers' headquarters.
With Davis out, Jagodzinski, the Packers' tight ends coach, enters training camp next week with only one of his players - last year's first-round pick, Bubba Franks - having caught an NFL pass.
"I'm disappointed, but we've got to move on. What are you going to do?" Jagodzinski said. "It's a big blow, because the way Ty was progressing through the minicamps, I thought he was going to be a big factor. But those type of things happen."
It's ironic the loss of Davis is significant considering the Packers had begun to view Davis as expendable because of his expanding waistline earlier this offseason. After playing at 252 pounds during his seven-touchdown season of 1998, Davis finished 2000 at 277 pounds. Despite orders to lose weight, he came to the team's post-draft minicamp in April at around 280 pounds and landed himself in coach Mike Sherman's doghouse.
The weight was coming off until he was injured June 6 during the team's final offseason minicamp. Now Davis, who caught 19 passes for 177 yards and two TDs last season, is likely out for the year and his career is in jeopardy.
