This summer will be the most expensive ever for Hollywood, with even the junk movies costing upwards of $50 million. All the studios are going for broke, the logic being that the more they spend, the more they'll make. But just as many films are destined to thud at the box office as become blockbusters. The only question is, which ones?
Here's the lineup by price: "Waterworld" in the lead by many lengths at $175 million, followed by "Batman Forever" at $70 million to $100 million. "Judge Dredd" is third at $80 million; "Die Hard with a Vengeance" and "First Knight" are in fourth place with $75 million. "Braveheart" cost $72 million; "Congo" and "Under Siege 2" $60 million; and "Pocahontas" and "Crimson Tide," $55 million. Rounding out the main contenders are "Apollo 13" at $53 million and "Casper" and "Johnny Mnemonic" at $50 million.
