Mt. Lebanon powerlifter Dan Kovacs trains for a competition much like a baseball player warms up in the on-deck circle.
Similar to the technique of using extra weights on a bat to make it heavier to swing, Kovacs keeps his body weight low during the off-season to make the weights heavier to lift.
This training regimen has enabled Kovacs, 27, to retain the title of Super Heavyweight Senior National Powerlifting Champion. He won his second consecutive such title late last month in a competition sanctioned by the International Powerlifting Association. It is Kovacs' second title in as many years.
