The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints plans to build small temples in six Southern cities, including Memphis.
The Memphis Tennessee Temple will be at 4165 Whitten Road in Bartlett. A groundbreaking ceremony will be Saturday.
Local Mormon officials hope to finish construction of the $2 million, 10,000-square-foot temple by year's end.
The Memphis Temple will be one of 100 Mormon temples around the world. It will serve about 20,000 Mormons in West Tennessee, North Mississippi and Arkansas.
"This took us by surprise," said Darrel K. Danielson, president of the Memphis Tennessee Stake.
"We figured it would be some time before we got a temple."
For Latter-day Saints, temples are the most sacred structures, central to their beliefs.
