GREEN BAY - ShopKo Stores Inc. plans to close 23 of its 394 discount department stores as part of a reorganization that will cut 2,500 jobs.
ShopKo said it would close the 23 stores in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska and Missouri, as well as a distribution center in Quincy, Ill. No timetable was given for the closings.
The job cuts also include 136 positions at the company's corporate headquarters in Green Bay and another 41 at the Pamida division headquarters in Omaha, Neb.
Chairman and President William Podany said the cuts result from a corporate review launched in November to re-engineer the company's capital structure and asset base in "what has become a challenging retailing environment."
Employees being released will be offered severance packages and outplacement services, ShopKo said.
