An East Hampton-based company has been picked to renovate a historic pier on the Hudson River for a first-class restaurant, an inexpensive food emporium, visitors center and facilities for Fire Department boats, city officials said yesterday.
The $17-million revival of the 102-year-old Pier A, the last masonry-arched pier in the city, represents a potential magnet for tourists and a measure of economic diversification for lower Manhattan.
The designated developer and operator is Wings Point Associates Inc., which operates the Wings Point Yacht Club in East Hampton and restored the landmark McNeil's Ferry in Vermont. The company beat three others in a selection process that considered qualifications, financial return to the city, respect for the pier's landmark status and job-generation.
