North central Iowa, particularly in small cities, is hardly a fertile recruiting area for Notre Dame football. Some 38 years ago, however, interim coach Hugh Devore uncovered a tall, lanky tackle prospect in Paul Seiler from Algona, about 30 miles from the Minnesota border.
Seiler, who passed away at age 55 in late September, toiled with the freshmen in the fall of 1963, but moved up to a reserve role backing up Bob Meeker in Ara Parseghian's first season of 1964. He saw only seven minutes of action in the 10 games.
In 1965, Seiler was still the No. 2 right tackle behind Meeker but he logged 52 minutes in another good season. "We saw signs of improvement all year," Parseghian said. And in the spring, Seiler was awarded a Frank Hering award as the Most Improved Tackle. Assistants Doc Urich in the first two years and then Jerry Wampfler worked Seiler hard and the improvement was apparent.
