Gophers goaltender Robb Stauber, who has said that he enjoys facing breakaways, experienced an odd feeling against Wisconsin at the St. Paul Civic Center four weeks ago in the WCHA playoff final.
"Sometime during that game against Wisconsin, I had a real strange vision," he said. "All of a sudden, I imagined playing against my brother Pete in the NCAA finals."
What would happen in such a confrontation? What if the national championship depended on Pete Stauber skating in at Robb Stauber on a breakaway?
"I don't know," Robb said. Then he smiled. "I guess if it was a breakaway, I'd have a good chance."
Pete Stauber's three assists helped Lake Superior State beat Maine 6-3 in Thursday's semifinals. That left it up to Robb Stauber and the Gophers to do their share Friday night. But Robb Stauber's vision fell 12 seconds short.
# A downtown Lake Placid store still sells souvenirs of the 1980 Winter Olympics, when the U.S. hockey team won the gold medal. A store clerk recalled not only the '80 Olympics, but also the 1984 NCAA tournament held in Lake Placid.
"That was the game that turned me into a hockey fan," she said. "It was the greatest game ever played."
The United States-Soviet game?
"No," she said. "The game when Minnesota-Duluth lost to RPI in four overtimes in the 1984 NCAA final."
