The revival of prime-time network game shows may be a hot new trend, but hosting them is clearly not a young man's game.
Clark, of CBS' new "Winning Lines," is 70. Philbin, of ABC's smash "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," is 68, and Povich, at 61, is almost three times NBC's new "Twenty One." The baby of the group is 58-year- old Woolery of Fox's "Greed."
What's up with that, Mr. "American Bandstand"?
"There's no training ground, no farm team, for game show hosts," explains Clark. "Nobody knows how to do it. Everybody thinks all you need is a good set of teeth and a friendly smile.
"People don't realize that a good host has to produce, write, direct, ad-lib, and keep track of 10 things simultaneously while making it look easy. That takes practice."
Practice? Clark hasn't exhaled since he broke into broadcasting in 1946.
