The Top Performers
BOYS BASKETBALL PAT SULLIVAN, Bogota
The Bogota center was named to the 1980s and 1990s All-Decade teams. As a 6-7 senior he led the Bucs to the Bergen Jamboree and State Group 1 championships. Their lone loss in 32 games was a one- pointer to Snyder in the Tournament of Champions quarterfinal round.
Sullivan's scoring dropped five points from his junior year as he averaged 26.5 (along with eight rebounds), but the Bucs were involved in so many blowouts his playing time was reduced. A four-year starter, he finished his career with 2,546 points, which at the time was second highest in Bergen County history.
The dominating rebounder could score inside, but wasn't afraid to move away from the basket. Whenever he was double-teamed, he had the ability to pass to an open teammate. He went on to earn a scholarship from North Carolina and appeared in three NCAA Final Fours including the 1993 championship win over Michigan in which he converted a late free throw in a 77-71 thriller.
He went on to coach at the high school level and was an assistant for the Tar Heels.
GIRLS BASKETBALL CHRISTINE SACCO, Northern Valley at Old Tappan
Bergen County girls basketball flourished during the Nineties.
Besides the players who were named to The Record's All-Decade team, there were countless others who made the Nineties a terrific 10- year period. But of all the stars who dotted the Bergen hardwood, Christine Sacco shined the brightest. She possessed the soft hands of a skilled point guard, the eagle eye of a fine two-guard, and enough aggressiveness and size to be a formidable power forward.
On her way to 2,053 career points, the Norwood resident averaged 27 points and 10 rebounds as a senior when the Golden Knights were 23- 2.
She also made the Associated Press All-State first team, the first Old Tappan girl to receive such an honor. The year before, when the Knights were 26-3 and played for the Bergen championship, Sacco averaged 20 points a game.
WRESTLING DAMION LOGAN, ST. JOSEPH Remarkably, Bergen County developed two three-time State wrestling champions in the 1990s, but only one could be named Wrestler of the Decade.
The final decision came down to head-to-head...
