Kelly Hecking is accustomed to receiving surprises from her mother, Diana, when the two get together at Kelly's swim meets. Usually, the gift is along the line of a bag of Kelly's favorite snack.
But this weekend, when Hecking swims her final collegiate meet for Notre Dame, her mom makes the trip from Rutherford with a present that will last much longer than a bag of sweets. For the last month, she has been sewing a quilt that chronicles the overwhelmingly successful swimming career of her daughter.
The panels are formed from photos scanned onto iron-on fabric and the border fashioned from two decades worth of blue ribbons. The front is a melange of pictures and newspaper headlines and the back a patchwork of Kelly's swimming T-shirts from age 7 on.
