I have seen the future of popular music, and its name is Marc Anthony.
On Friday at the Historic Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, the '90s salsa star-turned-brand-new-pop-star suggested that the future is bilingual concerts. He used two bands - one for the salsa songs sung in Spanish, another for pop songs sung in English - trading off every two songs or so. Although the pop pieces didn't measure up to the salsa in songwriting quality, the bilingual bit worked just fine. The crowd embraced both styles with equal fervor.
The triumph of the concert had as much to do with the star as it did with his music. Anthony, 31, a New Yorker whose parents are from Puerto Rico, was a magnetic performer, exuding an undeniable joyousness. Wiry and loose-limbed, he scurried about the stage...
