At a lavish ceremony in London's Grosvenor House Hotel last night (Tuesday 7 July), the annual Oscars for the hospitality industry - the highlight of the hotel and restaurant year - were announced.
The 1998 Caterer & Hotelkeeper Awards, or Cateys as they are more affectionately known in the industry, are now in their 15th year and are attracting more interest than ever. "It's a testament to the prestige of the awards that the quality of nominations in each category is sustained, or improved upon, year on year," said Forbes Mutch, editor of Caterer & Hotelkeeper, introducing the awards.
One of the most highly sought after Cateys has to be the Chef Award sponsored by British Meat. This year's recipient, already the winner of two Michelin stars, is Philip Howard, Chef-proprietor at The square in London. He was applauded by the judges (all past winners, themselves) not just for his flair in the kitchen but also for his professional conduct. "He represents the very best Britain has to offer," they said.
Independent Restaurateur of The Year, sponsored by Bernard Matthews Foodservice, this year went to "One of the nicest people in the industry" according to...
