Seoul, 25 August: A Buddhist monk stopped a 58-day hunger strike Wednesday after the government pledged to suspend construction on a controversial high-speed rail tunnel through two mountains in southeastern South Gyeongsang Province until a high court ruling is made on its viability, a presidential spokesman said.
"Monk Jiyul decided to stop the hunger strike, as Moon Jae-in, senior presidential secretary for civic and social affairs, and Vice Environment Minister Park Sun-sook visited the scene of the hunger strike," Kim Man-soo, deputy spokesman for the presidential office, said.
