IMPHAL, Jan. 2 -- The year 2009 which came to an end on Thursday will be remembered in Manipur's history as one of the bloodiest years in the recent past as it was marked by kidnappings, murders, encounters and even 'fake' encounter killings, all of which sparked off a series of public agitations throwing the State machinery and normal life out of gear.
The State's most infamous encounters of the year took place on July 23 at the busy Bir Tikendrajit Road in the heart of Imphal town. In the incident police commandos shot dead former insurgent Ch Sanjit in an alleged encounter, which was later on claimed by family and the public as a 'fake encounter' following the publication of a number of photographs of the incident by New Delhi based newsmagazine Tehelka.
