On Long Island, 34 state and county parks and historic sites rely on private "friends" groups -- 10 belong to Nassau, 15 to Suffolk and nine to New York State.
1. SANDS POINT PRESERVE
Friends of Sands Point
Founded in 2003, it raises funds and runs site, leads house tours and helps restore grounds and buildings.
2. GARVIES POINT MUSEUM AND PRESERVE
Friends of Garvies Point
Founded in 2007. Provides operating funds, runs gift shop, arranges speakers and programs, organizes beach cleanup.
3. ELDERFIELDS PRESERVE
Art Guild of Port Washington
The group restored a historic mansion in Port Washington to use for classes and exhibits.
4. CEDARMERE
Friends of Cedarmere
Founded in 2008, group to support William Cullen Bryant estate incorporated this year and is seeking agreement with county to open and operate the site closed for more than a year. More information by e-mailing wcbryant@optonline.net.
5. WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT PRESERVE
Nassau County Museum of Art
Under an arrangement dating to 1989, a private board raises funds and operates and maintains the buildings and grounds.
6. BAILEY ARBORETUM
Friends of Bailey Arboretum
Founded in late 1960s, raises about $200,000 annually and operates site for county
7. PLANTING FIELDS ARBORETUM STATE HISTORIC PARK
Planting Fields Foundation
The Coe Foundation, created by the family of the estate's former owners, became the Planting Fields Foundation in 1979. Manages endowment
and provides $250,000 annually to supplement state operating budget. Presents exhibits and programs.
8. HEMPSTEAD PLAINS PRESERVE
Friends of Hempstead Plains
Founded 2001, it raises funds, helps protect and restore prairie habitat, and runs programs.
9. TANGLEWOOD PRESERVE
Center for Science Teaching & Learning
Since 2004, the group has spent $400,000 restoring buildings and has restored
trails and created a butterfly garden. It also has been removing invasive species.
10. BROOKSIDE PRESERVE
