KAREN TOOLE - REFLECTIONS
ON Friday, Oct. 20, I will get up earlier than usual in order to pay $25 for a bagel or muffin and a cup of coffee.
I will be at the convention centre with hundreds of others around 7:15 a.m. I plan to attend the sixteenth Annual Person's Day Breakfast in order to support the Legal Education Action Fund, L.E.A.F. Manitoba.
I feel grateful that I have the $25 to donate. I feel grateful that there is such a thing as a Legal Education and Action Fund that enables women who have been marginalized and silenced to legally challenge the injustices that have occurred. I feel immensely grateful that there is such a thing as a Person's Day which affirms my right to be counted as a person.
The speaker at this year's breakfast is Heather Bishop. We're not accustomed to seeing Heather's name as a guest speaker; entertainer yes, but not speaker. Yet Heather would have been silenced as a musician if she had not found within her the voice of her "person"-hood, and become a spokes-"person" for people who by virtue of their sexual orientation were not...
