PITTSBURGH -- Ottawa's Anton Volchenkov took a hard pass from Mike Comrie and blasted a 30-foot shot over Marc-Andre Fleury's left shoulder midway through the third period to give the Senators a lead they would not relinquish.
Volchenkov, a defenceman, scored only once in 78 games during the season and had only one previous playoff goal, four years and a day before scoring his second. He has only nine goals in 229 career regular-season games.

* Pittsburgh has come back from a 3-1 playoff deficit before, in 1995 against Washington, but the Senators are 3-0 after they go up 3-1 in a series.
* Pittsburgh has dropped the fourth game of its last eight playoff series, this time because the Senators were able to contain NHL scoring champion Sidney Crosby, who was held without a goal for the first time in the series, and rookie Evgeni Malkin, who has yet to score.

* NEW YORK -- Jaromir Jagr and Michael Nylander made Atlanta goalie Kari Lehtonen long for his safe spot on the bench. And the New York Rangers' top line needed less than a period to do it.
Lehtonen got the curious start over Johan Hedberg and then endured a thorough beating as the Rangers scored three times in the first period and cruised to victory.
