In 1986 the discovery of a blackand-white children's picture book in a school library triggered a debate so fierce that its echoes can still be heard in the corridors of power today. The book was called Jenny Lives with Eric and Martin, and it featured tales from the everyday lives of a fiveyear-old girl living with her father and his male partner.
