Lawrence addresses national ADL in Boston
When it comes to freedom of speech on campus, Brandéis' new president is blunt: "Part of being a student is you will be upset by what other people say." But in a speech to the Anti-Defamation League in Boston last week, Frederick Lawrence distinguished between speech that provokes and speech that hurts.
Lawrence - who assumes his Brandéis post on Jan. 1 after having served as dean of the law school at George Washington University - addressed the question of why hate speech is so common on campuses.
