Philip Glass, who, according to his website, has composed an astonishing twentyfour operas, wrote Kepler as a commission for the Landestheater Linz in Austria. Kepler, the seventeenth -century mathematician, astronomer and astrologer, taught in Linz for fifteen years and did some of his most influential work there; this CD was recorded live at the Linz world premiere in September 2009. Martina Winkel's German and Latin libretto consists of original writings by Kepler, plus excerpts from the work of poet Andreas Gryphius, a Kepler contemporary, as well as the opening passage from the Book of Genesis.
