Former Restaurateur/Chef
For nearly four decades, Morris Martick was the owner and operator of Martick's Restaurant Francais, at 214 W. Mulberry St., until closing in September of 2008. A celebrated Charm City character, Martick has lived all of his 88 years in the mid- 19thcentury building that housed his quirky yet highly regarded bistro and once served as his Polish-Jewish immigrant parents' grocery/ speakeasy/tavern. "I don 't know why people are so fascinated with me," he says. "I don't think Vm such an enigma, but I do think my lifestyle is enigmatic. I'm a creature of habits - all bad."
* The secret to running a successful business is no secret. It's just hard work. You have to be dedicated and overcome a lot of obstacles. Life doesn't flow in a straight line. You run into problems you didn't foresee or understand, and you have to make decisions. That's not always easy to do.
* I never had problems with customers. They were willing to come to Mulberry Street - well-to-do and middle-class customers. The Jewish ones were the best. Very demanding - everyone knows they're the most critical - but by them coming here meant you were a success.
