WEIRTON - People who wanted to see an explosion and a bridge collapse got what they wanted as the sun rose on Feb. 21 when a series of 490 explosive charges brought down the Fort Steuben Bridge connecting Weirton and Steubenville, Ohio.
Meanwhile, 28 miles down the Ohio River, people wait for the demolition of the bridge that so far has defied efforts over two decades to bring it down: the old Bellaire Bridge that once linked Benwood with Bellaire, Ohio.
The 83-year-old Fort Steuben Bridge had been closed for three years because of its condition and its limited use. The two-lane suspension bridge was next to the four-lane Veterans Memorial Bridge, which opened in 1990.
