AbstractPurpose The purpose of this article is to provide a review of the competencies and associated assessment techniques relevant to the practice of anesthesiology. Although many of the competencies are difcult to dene and measure specically, advances in assessment techniques have provided more opportunities to gather meaningful performance data.
Principal ndings Establishing the competence of anesthesiologists demands a host of measures, including standardized tests and less-structured peer evaluations. Simulation-based assessment will play an increasingly important role both in certication and in maintenance of certication for anesthesiologists.
Conclusions While there are many psychometric challenges associated with the assessments pertinent to the education of anesthesiologists, technological advances combined with an increased awareness of sound measurement principles will yield more meaningful competency measures that can be used to improve the practice of anesthesiology.
RsumObjectif Lobjectif de cet article est de faire la synthse des comptences et des techniques dvaluation associes pertinentes la pratique de lanesthsiologie. Bien que de nombreuses comptences soient difciles dnir et mesurer prcisment, les progrs observs dans les techniques dvaluation nous ont donn des occasions supplmentaires de rcolter des donnes de performance signicatives.
Constatations principales Une importante gamme de mesures est ncessaire pour tablir la comptence des anesthsiologistes, notamment des preuves normalises et des valuations par les pairs moins structures. Lvaluation base sur la simulation jouera un rle de plus en plus important, tant au niveau de la certication que du maintien du certicat pour les anesthsiologistes.
Conclusion Bien quil existe de nombreux ds psychomtriques associs auxvaluations pertinentes la formation des anesthsiologistes, les progrs technologiques combins une attention accrue aux principes de mesure solides entraneront la cration de mesures de la comptence plus signicatives, lesquelles pourront tre utilises pour amliorer la pratique de lanesthsiologie.
