Abstract

Since the Decade of the Brain in the 1990’s, advances in neuroscience have resulted in a growing corpus of research on the human brain and its effect on the person. Soon after, these discoveries were implemented in educational classrooms and the formation of a new discipline emerged—Mind, Brain, and Education (MBE) science. This dissertation investigates the extent brain-informed material has been integrated into required preaching textbooks within Southern Baptist Convention seminaries between 2018-2022. This research examined the textbooks using quantitative and qualitative methods. The study produced the first homiletical textbook survey unique to the Southern Baptist Convention. The primary discovery of this research study is that neuroscience is beginning to establish a presence in the preaching curriculum of the Convention’s seminaries, though there is still significant room for growth.
